Bangladesh has been a Party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) since February 27, 2005. Tobacco control activities and obligations under the WHO FCTC are mainly implemented by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. As a result of tobacco control efforts, the prevalence of tobacco use among adults in the country decreased from 43.5% in 2009 to 35.5% in 2017, according to the Global Adults Tobacco Survey 2017. While this is considered significant progress, more needs to be done to build a tobacco-free country by 2040. Repeated tobacco industry interference is flagged as the main obstacle to implementing overall measures to reduce the demand for and supply of tobacco.
